Whether to improve function or appearance, dental crowns have many uses. When you need a dental crown depends on your dental problem or cosmetic concerns.
About dental crowns
A dental crown is a cap shaped like a tooth placed over your natural tooth. The dental crown may provide strength to your natural tooth or change the color or shape.
We offer many types of dental crowns made from different materials, including:
Ceramic crowns are tooth-colored caps customized to match the color of your other teeth. We generally use ceramic dental crowns for the teeth in the front of your mouth.
Our metal dental crowns are made from gold. Gold is a resistant and durable metal that provides long-lasting results. However, we only place gold dental crowns on the back molars, where they’re less visible.
When you need a dental crown
From tooth restoration to appearance, dental crowns have many uses. You may need a dental crown to:
Fix a damaged tooth
A cracked or weakened tooth increases your risk of a serious dental infection. You may benefit from placement of a dental crown to strengthen the tooth and prevent more serious dental problems.
Dental crowns are also used to protect your natural tooth after a root canal.
Improve your smile
You may also need a dental crown to improve your smile. If you have misshapen teeth or tooth discoloration that can’t be fixed with teeth whitening agents, then a dental crown may be the perfect solution.
We custom-create your dental crown, so it looks just like your natural teeth. Improving the look of your teeth and your smile may boost your self-confidence and self-esteem.
You also need an implant crown for your dental implant. A dental implant is an artificial tooth root we surgically place in your jawbone.
After your dental implant has integrated with your bone during a process called osseointegration, we place a dental crown on the implant to complete your smile and restore your oral function.
Creating and placing your dental crown
Because we use dental crowns for many purposes, how we create and place the cap varies.
When you need a dental crown to fix your damaged or discolored tooth, we first reshape your natural tooth to make room for the dental crown. After reshaping, we use CAD/CAM (computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing) and laser technology to scan your tooth and create your crown.
With our advanced tools and in-office laboratory, we may be able to shape your natural tooth and place your crown in one visit.
If your crown is attaching to a dental implant, we take a dental impression or scan your implant to create your crown. You may need a separate visit for placement of your permanent dental crown to your dental implant.
Dental crowns are durable and may last up to 15 years. We recommend treating your dental crown like your natural teeth with daily brushing and flossing and regular dental visits for cleanings and examinations.
